Underwater Lighting

Underwater lighting in South Korea spans two distinct working environments. Open-water shoots run along Jeju Island's volcanic reefs off the Seogwipo coast, the East Sea diving grounds near Sokcho, the Wando archipelago, and the Yellow Sea around Busan and Incheon. Controlled work happens inside the dedicated Daejeon water film studio, with its 30.4 by 20.9 metre tank purpose-built for cinematic underwater scenes.

We supply dive-rated LED panels for cool, colour-accurate output across long takes. We also bring HMI submersibles for the powerful daylight-balanced punch that larger setups demand, with depth ratings reaching a hundred metres and beyond. Battery systems, surface power runs, communications, and on-set safety divers are arranged from start to finish. This lets cinematographers focus on the frame rather than the logistics.

Our crews are qualified divers as well as lighting technicians. They are drawn from the ops pool around Korea Maritime and Ocean University in Busan and the dive communities working Jeju year-round. Each shoot is planned around the way water behaves. Red wavelengths drop off fast with depth, so we deploy daylight-balanced fixtures and corrective filters on purpose rather than fixing in post.

Coast guard liaison through the Korea Coast Guard is arranged for each coastal day. The Daejeon stage suits shoots that need full control of camera angle, light position, and scene matching across many shooting days. Jeju and the East Sea give the location authenticity that K-drama and global feature work increasingly needs. We support K-content cash rebate forms where shoots qualify.

Korea's four seasons shape how we light each dive. Summer water off Jeju runs warm and clear, so daylight-balanced LEDs blend with natural sun on shallow reefs. Cold winter months push work into the heated Daejeon tank, where we control every beam without weather risk. Our gaffers also account for the country's 220-volt, 60-hertz mains when sizing power, and run silent battery rigs when shore supply is far from the water.

After each session our team protects the footage and the data behind it. The DIT runs dual backups on set and logs every lighting setup against the camera reports. We then deliver a water-tuned grade in ARRI or Sony color science, matched across natural and tank days so the cut feels seamless. Lighting plots, gel choices, and depth notes hand off to your post house so any pickup or VFX work matches the original look.
