SCENE 01 / UNDERWATER FILMING

Underwater Filming

Professional marine cinematography with certified dive teams across Korea.

Scroll

Underwater filming captures images below the surface using waterproof housings, lighting rigs, and strict safety steps. South Korea offers Jeju Island's volcanic seascapes, the East Sea's clear water along the Gangneung coast, the Yellow Sea, and the Korea Strait around Busan. It also has one of Asia's most capable controlled-water sites.

Our team sets up dives with certified Korean crews and sources cinema-grade waterproof gear. Permits clear through the Korea Coast Guard and local port authorities. We also handle the logistics for Jeju's volcanic dive sites, Busan coastal shoots, and tank work at the Daejeon water film studio, a 30.4 × 20.9 m pool built for maritime scenes.

Safety First

On Location

Dive crews across Jeju reefs and the Daejeon water tank

Underwater filming in South Korea draws on a coastline that few crews fully use. The top sites span the volcanic reefs off Seogwipo and Jungmun on Jeju Island's southern shore. They also include the Wando archipelago with its clear summer water, the East Sea off Sokcho, and the Korea Strait around Busan.

Our dive teams hold commercial film credentials and work under crews trained through the Korea Maritime and Ocean University in Busan. They supply cinema-grade housings for ARRI, RED, and Sony bodies. The unique haenyeo freediving custom off Jeju gives shoots a cultural and visual anchor that is truly Korean. Our team arranges the access needed to film with the divers without disrupting their working day.

Controlled tank work runs at the Daejeon water film studio, a purpose-built thirty by twenty-one metre maritime pool that ranks among Asia's most capable tanks. We also have access to studio pools at Busan Cinema Studios for scenes that need fully managed conditions. Permits route through the Korea Coast Guard and the regional port authorities, and the DMZ coastal zones stay off-limits. Our team leads route shoots toward Sokcho and Pohang.

We know the Jeju coves that always deliver. Safety cover includes dedicated supervisor divers, breathing gear for long actor takes, surface-to-diver links, and medical standby. Our cinematographers brief non-diving talent through pre-shoot training that lets them perform well underwater. KOFIC paperwork runs in parallel to confirm rebate eligibility for qualifying K-content shoots.

Korean waters change sharply with the seasons, so our crews plan dives around them. Summer brings warm, clear water off Jeju and the East Sea, ideal for reef and freediving work. Winter pushes shoots toward the heated Daejeon water film studio tank, where temperature, current, and light stay fully controlled. We pack drysuits, surface heaters, and rotation schedules so talent and crew stay safe and comfortable through long shooting days.

On set our gaffers pair waterproof housings with Astera Titan tubes and HMI submersibles to shape light beneath the surface. Topside, a Teradek Bolt link feeds the director a live underwater feed, and Sound Devices recorders capture any surface audio. After wrap, our DIT secures the footage with dual backups, applies a water-tuned grade in ARRI or Sony color science, and delivers the cut in your chosen format with full camera reports.

FAQ

Underwater Expertise

What cameras can you use underwater?

We run pro underwater housings for cinema cameras, including RED, ARRI, and Sony bodies. Our team matches each camera and housing pair to your resolution, frame rate, and image quality needs.

Do you provide certified dive teams?

Yes. All our underwater crews are certified commercial divers with real film experience in Korean waters. Teams bring dive shooters, focus pullers, safety divers, and dive supervisors as needed, all at home in Jeju and East Sea conditions.

Can you film in pools and tanks?

Yes, and Korea is unusually well set up for tank work. The Daejeon water film studio is a purpose-built 30.4 × 20.9 metre maritime tank. We also shoot in studio pools and at the Busan Cinema Studios site. These controlled spaces suit actor work, product shots, and any scene that needs precise control.

What about actor safety underwater?

Actor safety comes first. Our team provides safety divers, breathing gear for long takes, pre-shoot training, and clear communication kit. With the right support, non-diving actors can still nail striking underwater shots.

Where can you film in South Korea?

We film across Korea. Jeju Island offers volcanic reefs and the unique haenyeo freediving culture, Busan and the Korea Strait give easy-to-reach coastal sites, the Gangneung East Sea coast has clear water, and the Daejeon water film studio handles fully controlled maritime work. DMZ coastal areas stay off-limits, and our team clears every shoot through the Korea Coast Guard.

How do you handle underwater communication?

We use pro underwater communication kit, with in-water links for diver planning and surface-to-diver links. Directors can talk to underwater crews and watch shots live.

Productions in South Korea that need this often pair it with Underwater Lighting, Multi-Camera Setups, and Marine & Wildlife Filming for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Underwater Camera Operators and Camera & Cinematography.
