SCENE 01 / UNDERWATER FILMING

Underwater Filming

Professional marine cinematography with certified dive teams across Korea.

Scroll

Underwater filming captures imagery beneath the water's surface using specialized waterproof camera housings, lighting systems, and safety protocols. South Korea offers Jeju Island's volcanic underwater landscapes, the East Sea's clear water along the Gangneung coast, the Yellow Sea, and the Korea Strait around Busan — alongside one of Asia's most capable controlled-water facilities.

We coordinate underwater operations with certified Korean dive teams, source cinema-grade waterproof equipment, and manage permits through the Korea Coast Guard and local port authorities. Our team handles logistics for Jeju's volcanic dive sites, Busan coastal shoots, and controlled work at the Daejeon water film studio (a 30.4 × 20.9 m tank purpose-built for maritime scenes).

Safety First

On Location

Dive crews across Jeju reefs and the Daejeon water tank

Here is how this works in practice. Underwater filming in South Korea draws on a coastline that few crews fully exploit: the volcanic reefs off Seogwipo and Jungmun on the southern shore of Jeju Island, the Wando archipelago with its clear summer visibility, the East Sea off Sokcho. The Korea Strait around Busan.

Here is the short of it. Our dive teams hold commercial film credentials, work under the safety oversight of crews trained through the Korea Maritime and Ocean University in Busan. Supply cinema-grade housings for ARRI, RED and Sony bodies. The unique haenyeo freediving custom off Jeju gives productions a cultural and visual anchor that is genuinely Korean. We set up the access needed to film with the divers without disrupting their working day.

Here is the breakdown. Controlled tank work runs at the Daejeon water film studio, a purpose-built thirty by twenty-one metre maritime filming pool that is one of Asia's most capable tanks, with extra access to studio pools at Busan Cinema Studios for sequences that need fully managed environments. Permits route through the Korea Coast Guard and the regional port authorities, with the DMZ coastal zones remaining off-limits and our team leads routing productions toward Sokcho, Pohang.

The Jeju coves that consistently deliver. Safety provisioning includes dedicated supervisor divers, breathing apparatus for extended actor takes, surface-to-diver comms and medical standby. Our cinematographers brief non-diving talent through the pre-shoot training that allows them to perform convincingly underwater. KOFIC records runs in parallel to confirm Korea Location Incentive eligibility of up to thirty per cent for qualifying K-content productions.

FAQ

Underwater Expertise

What cameras can you use underwater?

We operate professional underwater housings for cinema cameras including RED, ARRI, and Sony systems. We match camera and housing combinations to your resolution, frame rate, and image quality requirements.

Do you provide certified dive teams?

Yes, all our underwater crews are certified commercial divers with specific film production experience in Korean waters. Teams include underwater cinematographers, focus pullers, safety divers, and dive supervisors as required, familiar with Jeju and East Sea conditions.

Can you film in pools and tanks?

Yes — and Korea is unusually well-equipped for tank work. The Daejeon water film studio is a purpose-built 30.4 × 20.9 metre maritime filming tank, and we also work in studio pools and the Busan Cinema Studios facility. These controlled environments are ideal for actor work, product shots, and sequences requiring precise control.

What about actor safety underwater?

Actor safety is paramount. We provide safety divers, breathing apparatus for extended takes, pre-shoot training, and clear communication systems. Non-diving actors can achieve impressive underwater shots with proper support.

Where can you film in South Korea?

We film throughout Korea—Jeju Island offers volcanic reefs and the unique haenyeo freediving culture, Busan and the Korea Strait provide accessible coastal sites, the Gangneung East Sea coast has clear-water environments, and the Daejeon water film studio handles fully controlled maritime work. DMZ coastal areas remain restricted; we coordinate via the Korea Coast Guard.

How do you handle underwater communication?

We use professional underwater communication systems including through-water comms for diver coordination and surface-to-diver links. Directors can communicate with underwater crews and monitor shots in real-time.

Productions in South Korea that need this often pair it with Underwater Lighting, Multi-Camera Setups, and Marine & Wildlife Filming for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Underwater Camera Operators and Camera & Cinematography.
