Korean gaffers and electric crews built for K-drama scale

Korean lighting teams are ordered around the gaffer — the chief lighting technician — and run with the discipline that long-form K-drama scheduling demands. Our gaffers come up through The DMC hub and the studio complexes at Paju and Namyangju, with credits across Studio Dragon, JTBC and Tving shoots as well as feature work for CJ ENM and the major Korean producers.

Teams structure mostly pairs the gaffer with a best boy electric, a rigging gaffer on larger setups and a graduated team of electricians/sparks who handle set lighting, power packs ops and on-set adjustments. Gear is named through Seoul-based rental houses including NAC Image, KW Studio and Hello Pictures Korea. ARRI SkyPanel S60/S30 and M-Series HMI for principal lighting, Aputure 600x and 1200d for fast-deploy COB work, Kino-Flo Diva-Lite for soft-source coverage and Astera Titan tubes for practicals and pixel-mapped looks.

Crew matching is driven by format and creative drive. Cinematic feature lighting calls for gaffers who can build a SkyPanel/HMI plan to balance the long takes Korean DPs favour, while commercial campaigns and high-end edit want fast-turnover gaffers who can deliver beauty, fashion or product looks within tight agency timelines. Crews are two-language where global DPs are in the chair.

Pre-production has lighting plots, power assessments built against KEPCO 220V/60Hz mains and power packs rentals, and tech scouts across studio and location. KOSHA-aligned safety records is prepared as standard. Crews are routinely cleared for K-content cash rebates-eligible shoots shooting at CJ ENM Studios, KOFIC Namyangju Studios, Busan Cinema Studios and on location across Seoul and Jeju.

Our gaffers build the look the DP wants, not just hang lights. They set key, fill, and backlight ratios, shape soft sources through frames and bounce, and gel for warm or cool moods. Astera Titan tubes and SkyPanels are pixel-mapped for music video and concert looks. The team integrates practicals like neon signs and window light into the plan. On set the gaffer rides levels and colour temperature so each angle matches through the shoot.

Korean shoots run across Seoul streets, Busan coast, Jeju terrain, and the studio belt, through four sharp seasons. Night exteriors in Gangnam or along the Han River need big HMI units, condors, and balloon lights to lift wide shots. Cold Gangwon Province winters and humid summer monsoon days change how the team rigs and protects gear. Our gaffers plan power tie-ins, generator placement, and weather cover into every lighting plot.

FAQ

Our Lighting Network

What does a gaffer do on set?

The gaffer is the head of the electrical/lighting department, responsible for executing the DP's lighting vision. They design lighting setups, manage the electric crew, set up gear, and make sure safe power distribution across the production.

What crew positions are in a lighting department?

A full lighting department has: Gaffer (department head), Best Boy Electric (gaffer's assistant, manages crew and gear), Electricians/Sparks (set up and operate lights), and on larger shoots, Rigging Gaffers and Generator Operators.

Do your lighting crews bring their own equipment?

Crew and gear are mostly separate. We can set up gear packages from Korean rental houses to complement your crew booking. Some gaffers have personal gear for smaller shoots.

How many electricians do I need for my production?

Crew size depends on production scale: small shoots may need just a gaffer, medium shoots mostly need gaffer plus best boy and 1-2 electricians, while larger shoots need full departments with rigging crews.

Can your lighting crews work with international DPs?

Yes. Our gaffers are skilled working with global cinematographers and know global terminology, techniques, and workflow expectations. Many are bilingual Korean-English.

Do you provide generators and power distribution?

We set up power packs hire and distribution gear through our rental partners. Power packs operators can be had in crew packages for shoots needing major power infrastructure.

Productions in South Korea that need this often pair it with LED Lighting Systems, Portable Power Solutions, and Grip Services for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Gimbal Filming and Virtual Production.
