SCENE 01 / LOOK DEVELOPMENT

Look Development

Creative visual style development and LUT creation for distinctive cinematic aesthetics that define your production's unique identity.

Scroll

Look development sets the visual style and color of a production before the shoot begins. By testing cameras, lenses, lighting, and LUTs, it produces reference images and tech specs that steer the whole production toward one unified look.

We support this work by setting up camera tests, building LUTs, and joining your cinematographer and colorist around the same goal. Our team books the test rooms and tech kit so your visual look is defined, logged, and ready to guide steady image capture from day one.

On Location

Visual style and LUT design for Korean shoots

Look development happens before the first day of principal photography. It sets the look that every later choice of camera, lens, lighting, wardrobe, and location will be measured against. For shoots in South Korea, that means testing against the real palettes you meet on the ground. Those include the bright neon of Hongdae or Itaewon nightlife, the cool steel and glass of Gangnam business towers, the warm timber and paper of hanok interiors in Bukchon or Jeonju, and the deep volcanic blacks and ocean blues of the Jeju coastline. Our colorists run camera and lens tests with the cinematographer, build many look candidates on sample footage, and refine the chosen direction until the visual brief is settled.

The output is far more than a single LUT. It is a full style guide with several parts. They are tracking LUTs for set-side reference on Korean shoots, dailies LUTs for the post pipeline, a base CDL for the colorist to start from in the final grade, and written notes logging the creative intent behind each choice.

This record travels with the production from pre-production through the wrap-out. It keeps the director of photography, the on-set DIT, the dailies colourist, and the final-grade colorist all aimed at the same visual target. References can be drawn from Korean cinema, global comparisons, photography, or early concept art. The deliverable is always a distinctive look, tuned to the story and the footage in front of us.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

When should we start look development?

Ideally during pre-production. Early look development lets you use tracking LUTs on set, keep dailies steady, and align every department on the visual direction. We can also build looks during post-production if needed.

What do you need to create a look?

We work best with sample footage from your camera tests or early production. Visual references such as films, photographs, and artwork help too, along with mood boards and a talk about your creative goals. The more context we have on your story and vision, the better we can serve your project.

How do LUTs work in production?

We create tracking LUTs that apply to camera feeds and dailies, so everyone on set sees a preview of the intended look. These tech LUTs are tuned for different display types and viewing conditions, and they keep the full dynamic range in your RAW footage.

Can you match a specific film or reference look?

We can study and recreate the look and feel of your references, though we build our own take rather than exact copies. Our goal is to learn what draws you to those references and craft a distinctive look that serves your own story and footage.

Productions in South Korea that need this often pair it with Color Correction Services, Color Grading Services, and Online Conform & QC Services for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Narrative & Documentary Editing and Foley Recording Services.
