Look Development

Here is how this works in practice. Look development happens before the first day of principal photography and defines the look that every later decision. Camera, lens, lighting, wardrobe, location — will be measured against. For shoots in South Korea, that means testing against the specific palettes encountered on the ground: the saturated neon of Hongdae or Itaewon nightlife, the cool desaturated steel and glass of Gangnam business towers, the warm timber and paper of hanok interiors in Bukchon or Jeonju, the deep volcanic blacks and ocean blues of Jeju coastline. Our colorists run camera and lens tests with the cinematographer, develop multiple look candidates on representative footage. Refine the chosen direction until the visual brief is settled.

Here is the short of it. The development output is more than a single LUT: it is a complete style guide comprising monitoring LUTs for set-side reference on Korean shoots, dailies LUTs for the post pipeline, a base CDL for the colorist to start from in the final grade. Written notes documenting the creative intent behind each decision.

Here is the breakdown. This records travels with the production from pre-production through the wrap-out, making sure the director of photography, the on-set DIT, the dailies colourist. The final-grade colorist are all aligned on the same visual target. References can be drawn from existing Korean cinema, global comparisons, photography, or first concept art. But the deliverable is always a distinctive look tuned to the specific story and the specific footage in front of us.
